Two-Minute Tips: Creating & Managing Private Facebook Groups

It’s easy to create a private Facebook Group and invite individuals to participate in the group — even if they’re not your friend on Facebook. Learn the basics in this two-minute video.

This video features Heather Maves (@heatherm17), blogger & social media content writer for Sentry Insurance — and a mighty fine archer.

Talk to the lense: How comfortable are you seeing yourself on camera?

Smart phones, portable camcorders and webcams make it easy to share personal video.  The biggest obstacle to video blogging isn’t the technology. It’s us. Most of us still cringe when we see ourselves on video.

I’ve been learning this the hard way, working on The Space Crowd, a film that encourages people to contribute video of themselves discussing the impact that NASA and the space shuttle program has on their life.  I’m also learning to be comfortable seeing myself on camera — even though it still shocks me — to see how different I look and sound — from your perspective. Being on video triggers a natural social anxiety.

“This is the worst for me,” said Steve Glasberg, on a social anxiety support forum. “I hate the sound of my voice and how I talk. For some reason I don’t hear my voice the way it sounds on a camera or tape recorder. I hope mightily that video is not a true representation of my voice but how could it not be. Maybe it’s just my perspective that makes it sound horrible and other people don’t care but still I could die whenever I’m forced to watch myself.”

Caught on Tape: Apple leads the prosumer era

Apple is a trend setter when it comes to computers, music and the entertainment industry. They’re also trend watchers.  Apple is among the first to recognize the growing community of ‘prosumers’ like myself.

I’m shooting an independent film called The Space Crowd for the 2012 SXSW Film Festival with some like-minded NASA fans next week using the latest version of Final Cut Pro, a Cannon XA10 camcorder and a whole lot of SD cards. A decade ago, it would have been impossible A few years ago, it would have been tough.  Today, it only takes a lot of motivation and a bit of money for amateur directors (aka ‘prosumers’) to shoot and digitally master a feature-length HD film.

The term “prosumer” originated from the book The Third Wave. In it, author Alvin Toffler defined the prosumer as someone who blurs the distinction between ‘worklife’ and’ homelife.’ It’s also come to represent those that blur the line between ‘professional’ and ‘consumer.’ They’re people with full-time job that create films and stay-at-home moms that have their own photography studios.  They are professional hobbyists.

Two-Minute Tips: Local prospecting with Twitter

This video walks you through steps for finding, following and engaging with local prospects in your community.

Attracting a large group of local followers on Twitter can be a great asset for a local business. It allows you to extend special promotions and aggressive offers in real time.  For example, if you operate a local restaurant and business is slow, you can tweet limited time offers for ‘free appetizers’ or ‘free dessert’ to attract diners.

Twitter mobile use has skyrocketed over the past year, along with use of iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry and other smart phones.  40 percent of all tweets are now composed on mobile devices — which is twice the amount of mobile tweeting a year ago.

Two-Minute Tips: How to create a Twitter news robot

Robots — snippets of code that automatically post content to Twitter and other social networks — can be annoying when they’re overused.  When used properly, they can deliver timely information to interested followers.

This short video walks you through the simple steps needed to create your own Twitter News Bot. This example uses Google.com as the news source and Dlvr.it as the delivery engine.

Dlvr.it is a web-based service that delivers content from RSS feed to various social networks. Any news source that generates an RSS feed can be used to create a news bot. Although this example delivers news updates to Twitter, other destinations that are supported by Dlvr.it include Facebook, LInkedIn, Tumblr, Statusnet, Ping, Google Buzz, MySpace and FourSquare.
