Better than Google AdSense? Facebook ‘SocialSense’

For more than a decade, content publishers have used Google AdSense to monetize their websites AND advertisers leverage AdSense to promote their business.

The time has come for something better: a social advertising network from Facebook.  Let’s call it “SocialSense.”

The Heat Map of a Google Search

With Google, it’s not uncommon to find millions of results for your search query. The uncommon thing is caring about ANYTHING after the first page. Why? Millions don’t matter.

Google users want instant gratification when they’re searching. Consider these facts:  According to Google, 75 percent of Google users NEVER click past the first page. Link Popularity: The Internet’s ‘In’ Crowd

Having the best web site in your industry is a noble goal. A far more satisfying one is to have the most popular site.

However, recent changes among Yahoo and MSN mean that marketers need to reassess where to place ads beyond Google. Yahoo and MSN attract different users, and search engines have strong brand loyalty. Yahoo is a strong favorite with 18 to 34 year olds, while MSN and AOL have a stronger preference among the 35 to 55+ age group.

Armchair economics: Social media is key for professionals in a weak economy

j-shaped-recessionNet worth and consumption are falling. Unemployment and interest rates are rising. The economic outlook is weak for years. What can you do?

If you’re concerned about the economy, you can use social media to hedge your bets.

This week, I had the opportunity to listen to an economic outlook presented by world-class economist Nouriel Roubini. As the economist who began raising an alarm about recession-triggering behaviors in 2006, Roubini has become known as ‘doctor doom’ for his grim predictions. Nevertheless, Roubini has been included on Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. [Read more...]
