Two-Minute Tips: Creating & Managing Private Facebook Groups

It’s easy to create a private Facebook Group and invite individuals to participate in the group — even if they’re not your friend on Facebook. Learn the basics in this two-minute video.

This video features Heather Maves (@heatherm17), blogger & social media content writer for Sentry Insurance — and a mighty fine archer.

Auld Lang Syne: Old Friends and New Beginnings

I’m Resolute on New Year’s Eve, 2011.  So much, in fact, that I offered to purchase a new house today — nearly 100 miles away.

The offer to purchase a home on the Wisconsin River, near Stevens Point, WI, is part of a change that I triggered 60 days ago, when I accepted a great new job at Sentry Insurance.  The new job is only 90 miles away– but its a whole new life for EVERYONE in my family: New home, new schools, new community, new friends, new opportunities — and a new cloud of uncertainty as we consider the good friends and the good life we’ll be leaving in De Forest, WI.

I’m the Christopher Columbus (“new world explorer”) of our small band. While my family finishes the 2011-2012 school year at home, I’m exploring the new community and laying the foundation for our move.  I’m currently leading two lives, in two places.

Guest Blogger Marcy Massura says, “Don’t bother reading this”

Hey there. My name is Marcy and I am a fake.  A stand-in. I am an imposter.  I am not the blogger you expected, or wanted… or heck- I am not even a blogger you know. I am a ‘guest blogger’ and this is an official ‘guest post’. How do you feel so far? Are you thinking ‘where is the guy I CAME TO READ?’…oh don’t get nervous, he isn’t locked in a closet somewhere, he safe and is guest posting over on my site today. And you know what topic we chose to write about? GUEST BLOGGING and in my case WHY I HATE IT.

Yeah you read that right. I hate the very thing I am doing right now.

Blogs are personality and opinion driven. Those are the very things that differ them from traditional media. Bloggers are not only allowed, but are encouraged to speak their mind, show their character and generally reveal themselves to their readers. Remaining distant from topic is not expected and likely would not lead a blog into the realm of success online. Sure we like to think our readers like our CONTENT, but the reality? They like THE BLOGGER.  And when they come to read a blog regularly, they are stopping by to hear from that blogger.

Be my guest: Five great reasons to guest blog

It may seem counter productive to write content for someone else’s website when the success of your blog depends on your ability to drive traffic to it. Nevertheless, guest blogging is a great way improve your blog’s traffic and community.

The more I get to know Marcy Massura, the publisher of this blog, more I like her.  It’s not because we have a lot in common. It is because she’s uncommonly interesting. When we disagreed recently on the value of guest blogging, she put her ‘blog where her belief is’ — by offering me this forum to convince you (her readers) that guest blogging isn’t a waste of time.  With that goal in mind, here are five great reasons to contribute blog posts to someone else’s site:

Guest blogging builds awareness. One of the best ways to improve the awareness of your blog is to become an occasional guest blogger for a blog that has a large following.  This is one of the reasons that I write a unique blog post for  SmartBrief on Social Media every six to eight weeks. The blog reaches more than 89,000 marketers looking to stay ahead of social networking trends in a fast-changing environment. Hitting the SmartBrief audience on a regular basis allows me to attract new readers for my Social Meteor blog.

Don’t Scrimp on Scraping: Tips for Safe Driving in Inclement Weather

Ice on the road makes driving in inclement weather dangerous — and so does ice on your windshield.

To avoid delays and exposure to chilling weather, drivers sometimes take shortcuts. They make a half-hearted attempt to clean frost and snow from the windshield. They clear a small hole that offers some visibility, and hit the road.

However, taking shortcuts that bypass safety can have chilling consequences. Blind spots cause accidents. According to U.S. Department of Transportation accident statistics, more than 413,000 accidents are caused each year by blind-spot-related problems. Annually, these accidents damage more than 826,000 vehicles and injure or kill more than 160,000 people.
